South of Carmel, Highway 1 turns into Big Sur — the most photographed stretch of road in America, best driven before the tour buses wake up. Back on the peninsula, the Monterey Bay Aquarium anchors Cannery Row and 17-Mile Drive winds past the Lone Cypress to the Pebble Beach lodge.

The Two Weeks That Book Out First
Every August the peninsula hosts Monterey Car Week, ten days of concours, auctions and vintage racing that end on the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach. Monterey Regional handles roughly 675 private arrivals across the week against 225 to 250 in a normal one, with around 246 aircraft parked on the field, so parking becomes the hardest ticket in town. The 2027 Concours is Sunday 15 August, and from 2028 the whole event shifts a week earlier.
June 2027 is the other one, and it does not come round again. The US Open returns to Pebble Beach from 14 to 20 June 2027, the first time since 2019 and the last until 2032. Championship week puts a major field, its entourage and a national gallery onto the same small peninsula that Car Week fills every August, and tickets are already selling. If you intend to be there, the aircraft and the room want booking on the same call.
Where to Stay in Monterey and Carmel
The peninsula gives you three quite different bases. The Lodge at Pebble Beach is the one most people mean, a short walk from the eighteenth and freshly out of a property-wide refresh. Bernardus Lodge and Spa is fifteen minutes inland in Carmel Valley, where the fog burns off earlier and the wine country starts. L’Auberge Carmel is twenty rooms in the middle of Carmel-by-the-Sea, walkable to everything, with the Michelin-starred Aubergine downstairs.
Car Week governs the whole calendar. Rooms across the peninsula are committed a year out, minimum-night rules appear, and rates move to a different scale for those ten days. Everything either side of it is straightforward, and the shoulder months at each end of summer are when the peninsula is at its best and easiest to book.
Where to Eat in Monterey and Carmel
The peninsula eats far above its size. Aubergine in Carmel is the tasting-menu benchmark, Chez Noir the newer star a few blocks away. The Sardine Factory has anchored Cannery Row for more than fifty years, Passionfish in Pacific Grove does seafood the honest way, and Mission Ranch trades white tablecloths for a sunset over a sheep meadow.
