Where to Stay in Vail
Vail is really two villages, and where you sleep decides how much you walk. Sonnenalp sits in the middle of Vail Village, family-owned across five generations and the most consistently run hotel in town. The Sebastian is a few minutes east with the livelier bar scene. Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail holds the western entrance to the village and is the easiest of the three to arrive at with a lot of luggage.
The calendar is the constraint, not the room count. Christmas through New Year and the Presidents’ Day stretch are booked the previous spring, and the village empties twice a year — mid-April into early June, and October into November — when a good share of the hotels and restaurants close for the offseason. If you are flying in during the shoulder, confirm that the address you booked is actually open.
Where to Eat in Vail
Sweet Basil has been the reservation to have in Vail Village for decades and still is. Matsuhisa Vail runs the same kitchen discipline as the Aspen and Los Angeles rooms and is the steadiest table in town. Mountain Standard, from the same owners as Sweet Basil, is the one to book when you want the cooking without the occasion.
Book before you fly. The number of dining rooms in Vail does not change but the number of people in town does, and over the holidays the good tables go weeks out. Both Sweet Basil and Mountain Standard take a short break in the spring offseason, so if you are coming in late April or May, confirm hours with the restaurant directly.
