Sconset at the eastern end, where the rose-covered cottages and the Bluff Walk are exactly as advertised.
Rent bikes and ride the path out to Madaket for the sunset. Walk the Bluff Walk before nine, while it is still yours. Because roughly half the island is conservation land, the moors and the beaches never fill the way the town does — the crowding is on Main Street and at the dock, not on the sand.

Where to Stay on Nantucket
Nantucket rooms divide into two kinds — houses that belong to somebody, and a short list of proper inns. If you do not know someone on the island, the Union Street Inn is where to stay: twelve rooms in a 1770s whaling-era house two blocks off Main Street, Frette linens, and a full cooked-to-order breakfast no other inn on the island offers. It closes from late October to the end of April, which tells you what the season is.
The rest of the inventory is thin and priced accordingly. Summer rooms and the good rental houses move in February and March, and most July and August houses run seven nights, Saturday to Saturday. If you are deciding in June, you are choosing from what is left.
Where to Eat on Nantucket
Galley Beach is the island’s table — white linen in the sand at the end of Jefferson Avenue, a wine cellar past five thousand bottles, and the only dinner on Nantucket served close enough to hear the Atlantic. This season runs two courses at $98, and a sunset table in August books the way the aircraft does: early.
Almost all of it is seasonal — Topper’s, Straight Wharf, CRU and The Nautilus all close for the winter. In July and August a Friday or Saturday table wants four to six weeks of notice, and midweek still wants two or three. Reserve when you commit to the dates, not when you land.
Flying Into Nantucket Memorial (ACK)
In summer ACK is the second-busiest airport in Massachusetts, and it is still growing: 2,421 operations over the first six days of July this year, up nearly nine percent on last year, with 567 on the fifth alone. Runway 6/24 is 6,303 feet, which comfortably covers turboprops through super-midsize jets and makes runway numbers worth checking on a hot day with a full cabin.
There is no formal curfew, but the Airport Commission asks operators to limit movements after 11:00 p.m. and we plan around it. Fuel is the constraint nobody mentions: the airport brought in four 7,000-gallon trucks as additional storage this season, taking it to roughly 128,000 gallons, specifically to avoid rationing jet-A in August.
