What to Do in Big Sky
Winter is the headline. Big Sky Resort runs 5,850 skiable acres and 4,350 vertical feet, and the 75-passenger Lone Peak Tram puts you on an 11,166-foot summit with terrain falling away in every direction. The Big Couloir still requires an avalanche transceiver and a partner. The season runs from Thanksgiving week into late April, and midweek the mountain is quiet in a way the famous names never are.
Summer is the local secret. The Gallatin River runs wild beside the canyon road — Gallatin River Guides has outfitted it since 1984 — and the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park is about an hour south. Closer in, Ousel Falls is the classic short walk from Town Center and Beehive Basin is the alpine hike people move here for.
The calendar is filling in. Big Sky PBR takes over Town Center each summer — the next edition runs 22–24 July 2027 — and the inaugural Big Sky Food & Wine Festival lands 24–26 September 2026 with more than forty Michelin-starred and James Beard-recognised chefs cooking across the resort’s dining rooms.
Where to Stay in Big Sky
Montage Big Sky holds a MICHELIN Key — ski-in, ski-out on the Spanish Peaks side of the mountain, with wood-fired Italian at Cortina and the unhurried service the Keys are meant to measure.
One&Only Moonlight Basin opened high on the Moonlight side in November 2025 as the brand’s first US resort, and made TIME’s World’s Greatest Places list within the year.
Lone Mountain Ranch is the historic answer — a guest ranch the Butler family opened to visitors in the 1930s, with cabins along the creek, 80 kilometres of Nordic trails and sleigh-ride dinners in winter.
The Wilson Hotel in Town Center is the practical base — walkable to dinner, sensibly priced, and the right answer when Big Sky is one night on either side of a Yellowstone itinerary.
Inventory is the honest constraint. Big Sky’s beds are mostly residences and rentals, true hotel rooms are few, and Christmas through Presidents’ Day books out months ahead — with overnight aircraft parking at Bozeman going just as fast. Book the room and the aircraft together.
Inside One&Only Moonlight Basin
The first One&Only in the United States, and the group’s first mountain resort, sits on 240 acres of the Moonlight side, inside the 8,000-acre Moonlight Basin. Lone Peak’s northeast face fills most of the windows. It is not slopeside: skiing runs through the property’s own heated gondola, a ten-minute ride down to Madison Base and the Madison 8 chairlift.
Olson Kundig designed the lodge — 73 rooms and suites, plus 19 one- and two-bedroom cabins at around 960 square feet. Ninety-two rooms in total, which is small for a resort carrying this much attention, and the four- to six-bedroom private homes above them are a different order of booking again. Rooms have opened around $1,800 a night in the first year; the homes from $9,900.
Six bars and restaurants. Akira Back runs the modern Japanese room, Wildwood cooks Montana produce and covers breakfast, The Landing sits at the gondola, and Dear Josephine pours whiskey and moonshine. The spa runs to 17,000 square feet — adults-only lap pool, outdoor onsen, cold plunge and an oxygen room — enough of a programme to hold a stay together on a weather day.
It is in the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection, without a Key so far — Montage still holds Big Sky’s only one. Against a town that fills from Christmas through Presidents’ Day, 92 rooms is not much: the lodge and the private homes both book months out, and a February request is worth making before the flight is planned.
Where to Eat in Big Sky
The MICHELIN Guide’s restaurant inspectors have not reached Montana — the hotel Keys have, but there are no restaurant stars in the state — so the tells here are simpler: who is cooking, and how hard the table is to get.
In winter the answer to both is M by The Alinea Group, back in the Village Center at Big Sky Resort for a second season — 10 December 2026 to 3 April 2027, Thursday through Monday. Grant Achatz’s team runs the only Alinea Group room outside a major city, a tasting menu built around Montana ingredients. Reservations open 24 September, and the first season’s tables did not linger.
Horn & Cantle at Lone Mountain Ranch is the room to book first — Montana cooking in a log lodge, elk and trout done properly. Reservations open thirty days out and go quickly in ski season.
Buck’s Roadhouse is the institution — a Gallatin Canyon roadhouse since 1946 that closed for two years and reopened in December 2025 with the game-forward kitchen intact. The elk and bison lasagna survived the renovation.
The local tier is the point. Riverhouse BBQ smokes brisket on the bank of the Gallatin, Olive B’s in Meadow Village plates elk and bison for people who drove up from Bozeman for it, and Blue Buddha rolls sushi in Town Center that a town this size has no right to expect.
Flying into Big Sky

The Front Door
Big Sky has no runway of its own. The front door is Bozeman Yellowstone International — 8,994 feet of runway at 4,473 feet elevation, all-weather, an hour from the resort down the Gallatin Canyon. Everything from a PC-12 to a Global lands there year-round, and it is Peak’s home field.
The Holiday Surge
The constraint is the calendar, not the runway. Christmas through New Year and Presidents’ week, overnight aircraft parking at Bozeman is reserved weeks ahead, and quiet powder mornings put a queue at the de-ice pad. Book the aircraft when you book the house and none of it is your problem.
The Asterisk Fields
Ennis Big Sky sits over the ridge with 7,600 feet of runway at 5,433 feet elevation — but its shortcut into the resort, Jack Creek Road, is private, so it only works for Moonlight Basin owners and guests with road rights. West Yellowstone opens May to October and suits a park-first itinerary.

Yellowstone (WYS) — 8,400 ft at 6,649 ft in West Yellowstone, open May through October. Two miles from the park’s west entrance, and the right field when Yellowstone is the trip and Big Sky is the detour.
