What to Do in Sedona
The trails are the reason most people come — Cathedral Rock at golden hour, Devil’s Bridge for the photograph, Boynton Canyon for the quiet. The operational detail nobody mentions: trailhead parking is the bottleneck, not the trails. The city runs the Sedona Shuttle to the busiest trailheads, and the resorts will arrange private guides — worth it on spring weekends.
Oak Creek runs cold through the middle of it all — swimming holes in the canyon, Slide Rock when you want the classic, and the Verde Valley wine country around Page Springs twenty-five minutes out. Pink Jeep has run the backcountry tracks since 1960; book the Broken Arrow route.
Sedona has been an International Dark Sky Community since 2014, and the stargazing after dinner is a genuine event. Spring and fall are the windows that book out first — March through May and September through November — with summer monsoon afternoons putting on their own show over the rim.
Where to Stay in Sedona
Ambiente holds Two Michelin Keys — the only Sedona property rated that high in the Michelin Guide‘s hotel selection. It is an adults-only landscape hotel off 89A: forty freestanding glass-walled atriums lifted above the ground, built entirely around the view.
El Portal carries One Key — a twelve-suite, hand-built adobe hacienda beside the Tlaquepaque arts village, with fireplaces in the rooms and restaurants within walking distance.
Enchantment Resort has the setting nobody else can match — seventy acres inside Boynton Canyon, red rock walls on three sides, and Mii amo, the destination spa, on the grounds. Where to Eat in Sedona
Book Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill for sunset — this is the reservation to plan the day around. Lisa Dahl built it on a bluff over 89A with floor-to-ceiling glass and a west-facing terrace, and when the low sun lights up the red rocks the whole room turns to watch. Come early for a cocktail at the bar, stay for the wood-fired, Argentinian-leaning grill, and reserve weeks ahead in spring and fall — the terrace tables go first.
Cress on Oak Creek at L’Auberge puts the tables on the water — candlelit, under the trees, the most romantic room in town. Elote Cafe is the local legend: Jeff Smedstad’s Oaxacan-influenced kitchen has a national following and a reservation book that proves it. Che Ah Chi at Enchantment covers the night you don’t want to leave Boynton Canyon.
Then eat where the town eats. Tortas de Fuego is the taqueria locals argue about, Indian Gardens Cafe & Market does breakfast under the apple trees ten minutes up Oak Creek Canyon, and the Coffee Pot, a west Sedona institution, still lists 101 omelettes.
