Bozeman puts you twenty minutes from town and an hour from Big Sky. Kalispell puts you thirty minutes from Whitefish. Missoula puts you forty minutes from Paws Up. We arrange — you fly.
What to Do in Montana
Montana runs two distinct high seasons and they behave nothing alike. July and August belong to Yellowstone and Glacier, when the park roads fill and the Madison and the Gallatin are at their best. December through March belongs to the snow, when Big Sky and Whitefish Mountain fill and the valley towns go quiet.
Fly fishing is why a lot of clients keep coming back. The Madison, the Gallatin, the Yellowstone and the Bitterroot all sit inside a two-hour drive of a runway that takes a midsize jet. Guides book out for the salmonfly hatch in late June and again for the streamer weeks in October.
Yellowstone has two Montana doors. The west entrance at West Yellowstone is ninety minutes from Bozeman down the Gallatin Canyon and sits beside its own airport. The north entrance at Gardiner is the only one open to vehicles year-round, an hour and a half from Bozeman through Paradise Valley.
Glacier is at the far end of the state — five hours from Bozeman by road, thirty minutes from Kalispell. For 2026 the Park Service confirmed that no vehicle reservations are required anywhere in the park, though a shuttle system and new parking limits took effect at Logan Pass on 1 July.
Where to Stay in Montana
Two Montana properties carry Two MICHELIN Keys, the guide’s second-highest rating and rare this far from a city. Triple Creek Ranch at Darby is the older of them: twenty-five adults-only log and cedar cabins on the West Fork, Relais & Châteaux since 1996, all-inclusive down to the wine list.
The Resort at Paws Up at Greenough is the other, seventy-six rooms across a working cattle ranch forty minutes from Missoula. Its adults-only side, The Green O, is the quieter half. Both are Bitterroot and Blackfoot country, not Bozeman — pick the field around them rather than the other way round.
Montage Big Sky carries One MICHELIN Key and is the most straightforward luxury bed in the Spanish Peaks. Lone Mountain Ranch is the alternative a few minutes down the road — a 1915 ranch with cabins, a Nordic trail system and its own supper club.
Chico Hot Springs in Paradise Valley is none of the above and worth a night anyway: a hot-spring resort with plain rooms and the best dining room between Bozeman and Gardiner. In the northwest, The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is the dependable base for Glacier and Whitefish Mountain.
The honest constraint is inventory. Montana’s best beds are small — twenty-five cabins here, seventy-six rooms there — and the ranches sell out for the salmonfly hatch, the first week of August and Christmas well over a year ahead. Tell us the dates first and we will tell you what is actually open.
Where to Eat in Montana
Bozeman is the best eating town in the state and it is not close. Blackbird Kitchen at 140 East Main is the reservation to make — Italian, small room, books through Resy, and walking in on a Friday in July is optimistic.
Three blocks east, the Western Café at 443 East Main is the other half of the picture: an old-school counter-and-booths room doing home-made breakfast and lunch plates for ranchers and students. Go early, bring patience, skip the reservation because there isn’t one.
In Big Sky, Horn & Cantle at Lone Mountain Ranch is the room that takes non-guest bookings and earns them; its Auric Room 1915 supper club is members and on-ranch guests only. Buck’s T-4 on the Gallatin road opens at four and has been the local gathering place for decades.
The Chico Dining Room at Pray has been a Montana destination since 1974 and grows a good deal of its produce in geothermally heated greenhouses on site. Dinner from five, reservations highly recommended, and it is a real drive back over the pass afterwards — build the night around it.
Up in the northwest, Tupelo Grille at 17 Central Avenue in Whitefish has been doing Southern cooking since 1995 and is where locals send visitors. In Missoula, the bakery long known as Le Petit Outre now trades as Le Petit Bakehouse, still at 529 South Higgins, and is worth an early stop before the drive out to the Bitterroot.
Flying into Montana
The field decision, made honestly
Bozeman is the default, and it is filling up
BZN handled 2,809,419 passengers in 2025, up 6.3 per cent, and 19,588 business-jet operations, up 9.1 per cent. The main runway gained 328 feet last year and a $190 million east terminal is going up now. It works well. The constraint is ski-peak overnight parking, and Christmas and Presidents’ week go early.
West Yellowstone is a summer-only field
Yellowstone Airport at West Yellowstone has 8,400 feet of runway at 6,649 feet of elevation and sits minutes from the park’s west entrance. It is closed 31 October to 1 May and staffed daytime only in season. If Old Faithful is the whole trip it is the right answer from May to October, and no use at all in February.
Glacier is a different airport entirely
Glacier Park International at Kalispell has a 9,007-foot runway at 2,977 feet, Atlantic Aviation on the field and customs landing rights for international arrivals. Thirty minutes to Whitefish, about an hour to West Glacier. Do not try to serve Glacier out of Bozeman — that is a five-hour drive across the state.
The Airports Peak Uses
Bozeman Yellowstone International (BZN): Montana’s busiest, eight miles northwest of downtown. An 8,994-foot main runway that takes everything up to heavy jets, three FBOs — Jet Aviation, Yellowstone Jet Center and Million Air — and US Customs Thursday to Monday. Our office is twenty minutes away.
Yellowstone Airport (WYS): West Yellowstone, minutes from the park’s west entrance. 8,400 feet of runway at 6,649 feet, Ascension FBO Network, open 1 May to 31 October only.
Glacier Park International (GPI): Kalispell, 9,007 feet of runway, Atlantic Aviation, customs landing rights. Thirty minutes to Whitefish, an hour to West Glacier.
Missoula Montana (MSO): A 9,501-foot runway with Minuteman Jet Center and Northstar Jet. Forty minutes to Paws Up, ninety minutes to the Bitterroot.
Ravalli County (HRF): Hamilton, thirty minutes from Triple Creek Ranch, which is what makes that drive from Missoula optional.
Livingston Mission Field (LVM): Thirty minutes east of Bozeman over the pass, for Paradise Valley and Yellowstone’s north entrance at Gardiner.
Jackson Hole (JAC): Over the Wyoming line and the southern door to Yellowstone. Single runway, one FBO, overnight curfew and strict noise rules. Winter parking is booked months out.

Which airport should I fly into for Yellowstone?
It depends on the door you want and the month. Yellowstone Airport at West Yellowstone sits minutes from the west entrance but is only open 1 May to 31 October. For the north entrance at Gardiner, Livingston Mission Field or Bozeman is the answer, and the north entrance is the only one open to vehicles year-round. For the south entrance, Jackson Hole.
Can I fly private into Glacier National Park?
Not into the park, but Glacier Park International at Kalispell is close. It has a 9,007-foot runway at 2,977 feet of elevation, Atlantic Aviation on the field and customs landing rights for international arrivals. Thirty minutes to Whitefish and roughly an hour to West Glacier. Do not plan Glacier out of Bozeman — that is five hours of driving.
Is West Yellowstone Airport open in winter?
No. Yellowstone Airport (WYS) is closed 31 October to 1 May, and in season it is staffed daytime only and weather dependent. Winter trips to the park’s west side go into Bozeman and drive the Gallatin Canyon, roughly ninety minutes, or use the snowcoach services out of West Yellowstone.
How far is Big Sky from Bozeman airport?
About an hour, south on US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon. There is no closer runway that takes a midsize jet, so every Big Sky trip is a BZN trip plus a drive. Book the transfer with the flight, because the canyon road in a February snowstorm is not the place to be improvising.
Do I need a park reservation to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road in 2026?
No. The Park Service confirmed that no vehicle reservations are required anywhere in Glacier for 2026, including Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, Two Medicine and the North Fork. From 1 July a shuttle system and new parking restrictions apply at Logan Pass, so plan the day around the shuttle rather than a parking space.
When should I book a Montana trip?
Earlier than feels reasonable. The ranches sell out for the late-June salmonfly hatch, the first week of August and Christmas more than a year ahead, and overnight parking at BZN tightens over Christmas and Presidents’ week. There is no membership fee either way — you pay for the flight, not the privilege of asking about one.
