Where to Stay in Aspen
Aspen’s best rooms sit within a few blocks of each other, so the choice is a question of temperament rather than logistics. Hotel Jerome has been on Main Street since 1889 and still runs the J-Bar, the room where the town actually meets. The St. Regis Aspen Resort sits at the foot of Aspen Mountain with the ski concierge and the spa. Limelight Aspen is the least formal of the three and the easiest to book with a family, a block off the gondola plaza.
Inventory is the constraint. The town fills completely over Christmas, Presidents’ Week and the Food & Wine Classic in June, and those weeks book out the previous winter. Shoulder season — late April into early June, and October to Thanksgiving — is when Aspen is quiet, and also when a good share of it is closed.
Where to Eat in Aspen
Reservations are the whole game here. Matsuhisa has been in the Victorian on Main Street for over two decades and still holds the hardest tables in town, so book it the day the window opens. Clark’s Oyster Bar is the reliable one, lunch and dinner daily, and the room that works whether you have come off the mountain or straight off the airplane.
White House Tavern does not take reservations at all. It is walk-in only, the line forms early, and the chicken sandwich is the reason people stand in it. If you are here in May or November, check before you drive into town: a good share of the restaurant scene closes for the shoulder season.
THE AIRPORTS PEAK USES
Aspen is the most restricted field we fly on a regular basis. The constraints pick the aircraft, so we start here.
Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) — Sardy Field: Three miles from downtown, sitting at 7,820 feet. One runway, 15/33, 8,006 feet by 100. Wingspan is capped at 95 feet, which rules out a G650 and most heavy iron — a G550 fits. The field closes from 11 pm to 7 am and nothing departs after 10:30 pm. At Aspen a late slip becomes a diversion, not a delay.
Eagle County Regional (EGE): Seventy miles north, about ninety minutes by road. Nine thousand feet of runway at 6,547 — it takes the aircraft ASE will not, and it holds up better when the weather sets in.
Rifle Garfield County (RIL): Sixty miles west, a little over an hour out. Seven thousand feet at 5,536 — the lowest and warmest option in the valley, and the usual answer when Aspen goes below minimums.
Grand Junction Regional (GJT): Two hours by road, and the field still open when the rest of the valley is not.

Which airport do private jets use for Aspen?

Does Aspen airport have a curfew?

How far is Aspen airport from town?
About three miles, roughly ten minutes by car to downtown Aspen. Snowmass Village is about twenty minutes.
