SXSW runs March 15 to 21, 2027 — seven days of conference sessions, film and TV premieres, music showcases and comedy and podcast festivals stacked on top of each other in downtown Austin. There is no convention center this time; the building came down in 2025 and its replacement will not open before 2029. The festival now lives in the hotels and clubs between Congress Avenue and I-35, which changes how you plan the trip.
Choose Days, Not Tracks
SXSW published the 2027 shape in August, and it rewards reading. The Innovation tracks now run Monday to Friday, March 15 to 19, timed to business travel. Film and music keynotes carry on through Saturday and are open to Innovation badgeholders, the showcases run at night all week, and the comedy and podcast festivals stack four days in the middle, March 17 to 20. So you choose days, not tracks — and the business half of the festival now ends on Friday, not Sunday.

Festival Opens Monday, March 15
Everything starts on day one — conference rooms, first screenings, opening showcases. If the trip is about panels and premieres, arrive Sunday the 14th and take the front block.
Comedy & Podcasts March 17 to 20
The comedy festival and the new podcast festival run four days in the heart of the week, which makes Wednesday to Saturday the densest stretch of the seven.
Innovation Ends Friday, March 19
The business tracks close on Friday the 19th and the film and music keynotes run through Saturday, so Friday and Saturday are when departures stack up at both airports. Book the flight out before the flight in.
The Hotels Are the Venue Now
The Austin Convention Center came down in 2025 and its replacement is not due to open before 2029, so SXSW runs its conference in the meeting floors of downtown hotels. The published 2027 list names nine of them: the JW Marriott and the Fairmont carry the Innovation keynotes and the Expo, the Driskill and the Stephen F. Austin take Film and TV, and the Thompson houses the Music Clubhouse — all between Congress Avenue and I-35.
That changes the arithmetic. The conference hotels are also the venue, their blocks are claimed first, and their bars do the business the convention-center lobby used to. A bedroom upstairs from your morning panel is the best logistical decision of the week — made the day the badge is decided, not after.

The daytime is a conference. The night is a music festival, spread across dozens of clubs on Red River, Sixth Street and the East Side, running well past midnight. The badge covers both halves; the evening is where the week pays for itself.
The brand houses are the other after-hours economy. Companies take over restaurants and bars for the week and turn them into activations, which is why the reservation you did not make in February does not exist in March.
The day trip works here too. Austin-Bergstrom has no curfew and sits twenty minutes from the venues, so flying in for a keynote and out after a late showcase is an ordinary request rather than a negotiation.

Book the hotel where your track lives — the 2027 venue list is published. Innovation runs at the JW Marriott — 1,012 rooms, the largest JW in the Americas — and the Fairmont, which also takes the Expo. The Driskill, at Sixth and Brazos since 1886, is a Film and TV venue as well as the best bar on the street. The Thompson on San Jacinto holds the Music Clubhouse, and the Four Seasons on Lady Bird Lake hosts the Podcast Festival.
A badge is also the cheapest way into these rooms: SXSW Housing opened its discounted blocks in August, and badgeholders book them through their registration — the venue hotels go first. If the trip is about the showcases instead, Hotel Van Zandt on Rainey Street keeps Geraldine’s, its own fourth-floor live room, and fills with artists and labels for the week.
For distance from the noise: Hotel Saint Cecilia, a Victorian house behind a hedge off South Congress, carries a Michelin Key and is named for the patron saint of music. Austin Proper, Kelly Wearstler’s Michelin-Key room on Second Street, sits inside the footprint but calm above it. The Commodore Perry Estate holds ten walled acres four miles north — a country house within city limits. Festival-week rates move in one direction only — early is the whole strategy.
Where to Eat
The Michelin Guide gave Austin seven starred restaurants in its 2025 edition and put three of the stars on barbecue. Hestia, the live-fire dining room downtown, is the starred table closest to the festival. InterStellar BBQ holds another star half an hour northwest and sells out by early afternoon. Franklin Barbecue carries a Bib Gourmand and still draws the longest line in Texas.
The local tier matters more in March, when brand buyouts claim the reservation books downtown. Cisco’s has fried migas on East Sixth since 1950 and takes no notice of the festival around it. Joe’s Bakery, family-run on East Seventh since 1962, made the Michelin Guide without changing a thing. Nixta Taqueria on East Twelfth holds a Bib Gourmand and one of the guide’s rare Green Stars.
THE AIRPORTS PEAK USES
Two fields do the real work during SXSW, and two more earn their keep when parking runs out.
AUS — Austin-Bergstrom International is the primary: twenty minutes from the festival footprint, parallel runways of 12,250 and 9,000 feet, no curfew, customs on the field. Three FBOs — Signature, Atlantic Aviation and Million Air — sit on the general aviation side on Emma Browning Avenue, so the commercial terminal’s festival crowds never touch you. Parking is the constraint: SXSW week collides with spring break and FBO space books out well ahead. Reserve the parking when you book the flight.
EDC — Austin Executive is the escape valve and often the smarter play: a controlled field with a 6,025-foot runway and a purpose-built FBO, Henriksen Jet Center, about twenty-five minutes northeast of downtown. No airline traffic, no terminal crowds, and parking pressure a fraction of Bergstrom’s. Light and midsize jets fit comfortably; check performance for anything larger.
GTU — Georgetown Executive runs 5,004 feet, towered Class D, on the I-35 corridor about forty minutes north — the turboprop and light-jet reliever when the closer fields fill.
HYI — San Marcos Regional has the length the others lack — a 6,330-foot main runway — roughly forty minutes south. It is also where a repositioned aircraft waits out the week when Bergstrom parking is full: drop downtown, park at San Marcos, bring it back for the departure.
Booking Windows and Pricing
Badges for 2027 are already on sale and SXSW Housing opened its discounted hotel blocks in August 2026, so the aircraft belongs in the same decision, not a February afterthought. If the dates are fixed — and for a festival week they always are — book the departure leg first: Innovation ends Friday the 19th, the keynotes finish Saturday, and Friday and Saturday are when the departures stack up.
