Super-Mid Questions, Answered

Super-midsize jets seat 8 to 12, with nine or ten the comfortable number for long legs. The Challenger 350 we feature typically flies with up to ten in a double-club and divan layout. It is the class where a full group, their baggage and a working cabin all fit on one aircraft.

Most of the class covers 3,000 to 3,600 nautical miles. The Challenger 350 flies about 3,200, which makes coast-to-coast nonstop routine in both directions, with reach deep into Mexico, the Caribbean and Alaska. It is the smallest class where transcontinental planning stops involving fuel stops.

In recent months, all-in super-mid rates have typically run about $7,500 to $9,500 per flight hour. Peak quotes one fixed, all-inclusive number for the whole trip, and there is no membership fee in front of it. You pay for the flight, not the privilege of asking about one.

When 10 seats and 3,000-plus nautical miles cover the mission, which for most domestic and near-international flying they do. The heavy jet earns its rate on ocean crossings, 14-passenger groups and sleep-aboard legs. Everywhere else, the super-mid delivers most of the cabin at a meaningfully lower hourly number.

A flat floor with roughly six feet of headroom, stand-up movement bow to stern, a proper galley, an enclosed aft lavatory and connectivity that keeps a working group productive for four or five hours. Cabin altitude stays low, which is why a transcontinental leg does not flatten you on arrival.

With a stop, yes: routings through Goose Bay, Gander or Keflavik are well-trodden. Nonstop crossings are heavy jet work. If Europe is on the calendar, tell us early and we will price both options honestly, because sometimes the one-stop super-mid still wins on total cost.
