What size private jet do you need? Most people who call me cannot answer that, and they should not have to. They know where they are going, roughly when, and who is coming.

That is enough. The airplane is my job.

So here is how I actually get to an answer, in the order I get to it, with real trips instead of estimate ranges.

The category comes down to bags and bodies first, then distance. Two to six passengers on a short leg fits a light jet. Five to eight with real luggage wants a super-midsize. Ten or more, or an ocean, needs a heavy. But bigger does not reliably mean pricier: on our own booked trips, a light jet has averaged more than a midsize, because supply and lead time move a charter price more than the airplane does.

Private jets are grouped into five charter categories: turboprops, light jets, midsize and super-midsize jets, and heavy jets. The categories describe cabin size, range and runway performance, not luxury, and every category has aircraft that are newer and older, better and worse.

What size private jet do you need? Start with bags and bodies

Bags and bodies, before the spec sheet.

How many people are travelling, and what are they bringing. That is it. Not what you flew last time, not what your colleague recommended, and not the aircraft you saw on a website. Passengers and luggage set the floor, and everything else is a filter on top.

Distance comes second, and it matters less than people expect on domestic trips. Most of the continental US is inside the range of a midsize jet with a full cabin. Range starts driving the decision when the trip crosses an ocean or leaves from somewhere high and hot.

Third is what the trip is for. A ninety-minute hop for one executive and a four-hour leg with eight people and a dog are different problems even when the mileage looks similar.

A recent request shows the method working. A one-way from Kellogg, Idaho to Bozeman, one passenger, and she asked for a light jet specifically. Around here turboprop supply runs far deeper than light jet supply, the flight time on a leg that short is nearly identical, and the price gap was real money. We sourced both anyway and put them side by side, and she chose the PC-12: same trip, a similar clock, significantly less spent.

The category she called asking for was not the category she booked, and no spec sheet would have found that answer. The supply map did.

The five categories, and what each one actually does

Ranges are published figures and they move with payload, weather and altitude. Treat them as a starting point, not a promise. What does not move is the shape of the trade: every step up buys cabin volume and range, and costs money and availability.

That last word matters more than the spec sheet suggests.

Why the price ladder does not always ladder

Here is something no aircraft comparison page will tell you, because you have to be looking at your own bookings to see it.

Across the trips Peak has actually booked, our light jet flying has averaged more per trip than our midsize flying. On paper that is backwards. A Phenom 300 is significantly more economical to operate than a Learjet 60.

Two things explain it, and neither is about the airplane.

Supply. There are far more Learjet 60s available on the charter market than there are Phenoms. Deep supply pushes a price down. Thin supply holds it up. When two operators want your trip, you get a better number than when one does.

Lead time. A lot of our light jet requests came in on short notice, and short notice costs money in every category. Book Tuesday for Thursday and you are buying from whoever happens to be positioned nearby.

I want to be clear that this is a quirk of our book, not a law of the industry. Nationally, light jets are cheaper than midsize jets. But it tells you something true and useful anyway: on any given trip, supply and timing move the price more than the size of the airplane does.

Which is why I tell people to compare trip quotes, not hourly rates, and why a category you assumed was out of reach sometimes is not.

When to size up

The case for more airplane is almost never about luxury. It is about something that does not fit.

A repeat client of ours splits the year between Charleston and Bozeman and flies a season of luggage plus a dog who needs floor space on a four-hour leg. They paid roughly $1,800 more than the comparable option one category across for the cabin room and a newer airframe. On a trip that length, with that much to carry, it was the right call and I said so.

Another sizes up for a reason nothing on a spec sheet captures. A company took a Gulfstream to Las Vegas for an anniversary, C-suite plus spouses and families. For a ninety-minute flight that is more airplane than anyone needs, and I am usually the broker saying exactly that. But the trip was the occasion, not the transport.

Size up when the bags do not fit, when the passenger count is at the edge of the cabin, when the leg is long enough that comfort compounds, or when the trip itself is the event.

When to size down

More often, my job is the other direction.

Earlier this year we found a heavy jet repositioning empty back into the US and quoted it at $22,870 for a short international leg. Good number for that much airplane. Then we found a super-midsize that could fly the same trip for $17,500.

With five passengers aboard, the larger cabin was not earning the difference, so that is what they took. Past about seven passengers I would have gone the other way.

The reason I look for the smaller answer is not thrift. It is that an oversized airplane costs you money on every future trip you book by anchoring your expectations to a number you did not need to pay.

Size down when the passenger count sits comfortably inside a smaller cabin, when the leg is short, and when nobody is bringing anything unusual.

The exception that breaks both rules

Sometimes a bigger airplane is cheaper than a smaller one, and it has nothing to do with category.

A must-move is a flight an aircraft has to make whether or not a paying client is aboard: a repositioning leg home, to its next trip, or back to its owner. Operators discount them because the alternative is flying empty.

That $22,870 heavy jet was a must-move. On demand it would have been multiples of that. When one of these lines up with your dates and your route, you can end up two categories above what you planned to buy, for less than the category you planned to buy would cost on a normal day.

You cannot schedule around them. You can be told when one appears, which is what our empty leg flights list and the Peak app exist to do.

What summer in the mountains does to the answer

If your trip touches Aspen, Telluride, Vail, Jackson or Bozeman, the season changes the aircraft.

High elevation plus summer heat produces high density altitude, which robs engine performance and shortens what an aircraft can lift off a given runway. Marginal aircraft respond by leaving something behind: fuel, bags, or a passenger. Out here, July is the restrictive month, not January. Winter costs you deicing, not distance.

Practically, that means an aircraft that handles your trip in October may need to leave weight behind in July, and it means the newer variant of the same model is sometimes the difference between taking everyone and everything, or not.

Tell whoever is quoting you which mountain airports are involved, and in which month, before you compare numbers.

The airport question almost nobody asks

The United States has roughly 5,000 public-use airports, and only about 500 of them have commercial airline service (FAA).

That gap is the entire argument for flying privately, and it is also a category constraint. Some of those 4,500 have short runways, no instrument approach, or no fuel. A turboprop or a light jet gets into places a heavy jet simply cannot, and the right answer to “what size” is occasionally “the one that can land where you are actually going.”

So the destination airport is not a footnote. On some trips it overrides passenger count entirely.

What does not change with the category

Whatever you end up on, the vetting is identical.

Green means every category meets or exceeds the standard. Red is an automatic no.

A twenty-five-year-old turboprop and a two-year-old heavy jet go through the same review. So does the crew, individually, on your date. An operator’s rating covers the company, not the two people up front, and those are not the same thing.

Common questions about private jet sizes

What size private jet do you need for six passengers?

Six passengers fit comfortably in a midsize or super-midsize jet, and will fit in a light jet on a short leg if luggage is modest. The deciding factor is usually baggage rather than seats: most light jets seat six but cannot carry six people’s luggage for a week. For a trip over about three hours with full bags, a super-midsize is the more comfortable answer.

What is the difference between a light, midsize and heavy jet?

Cabin size, range and runway performance. A light jet typically carries five to seven passengers about 1,500 to 2,000 nautical miles, and a midsize carries seven to nine roughly 2,000 to 2,900. A heavy jet carries twelve or more and flies 4,200 to 7,500 nautical miles, with a cabin most adults can stand up and walk around in. Categories describe capability, not luxury.

Is a bigger private jet always more expensive?

No. Availability and booking lead time often matter more than category. On Peak Aviation Solutions’ own bookings, light jet trips have averaged more than midsize trips, because midsize supply is deeper and light jet requests more often came in on short notice. A repositioning must-move can also put you in a larger aircraft for less than a smaller one costs on demand.

How far in advance should you book a private jet charter?

As much notice as you can give. Short notice narrows the aircraft available near you and raises the price in every category, and international trips need slots, permits, customs handling and ground arrangements that cannot be compressed safely. Can a private jet land at any airport?

No, and this often decides the category. The United States has roughly 5,000 public-use airports against about 500 with commercial service (FAA), but many of those smaller fields have short runways, no instrument approach or no fuel. Turboprops and light jets reach airports heavy jets cannot use, so the destination sometimes overrides passenger count.

Does the season change which aircraft you should charter?

In mountain regions, yes. Summer heat at high-elevation airports like Aspen, Telluride and Bozeman raises density altitude, which reduces engine performance and can force an aircraft to leave fuel, bags or passengers behind. In the Mountain West summer is the restrictive season, not winter, and it can move a trip up a category or to a newer variant of the same model.

The right answer is the one that fits the trip

Two people and a dog have taken a nine-seat jet. Five people have taken a smaller airplane than the one I could have sold them. Both were right, and neither decision came off a spec sheet.

So when someone asks what size private jet do you need, the honest answer starts with your bags, your bodies and where you are actually going. Tell me those and I will price real options across categories, then tell you which one earns its money, including when that is the cheaper one.
