Most articles on this question compare spec sheets. Our book holds turboprop, very light jet and light jet trips, all flown and all invoiced, so instead of telling you where the crossover sits I can test it against what people actually paid.
It holds up at every band, and the arithmetic is below rather than asserted.
Quick answer: Charter a turboprop under about two flight hours, a very light jet from two to three hours, and past three hours a light, midsize, super-midsize, heavy or ultra-long-range jet depending on how many people are going and how far. Those bands overlap. Cabin seats, crew excluded: a King Air holds five to eight depending on model, a PC-12 seven to eight, a very light jet about four.
Turboprop vs light jet, in one rule
The Crossover Band is the range of flight times where two aircraft classes both work for the same trip, so passenger count, luggage and departure airport decide between them rather than flight time alone.
Here is the ladder I actually use.

The bands overlap on purpose. Around the two hour and three hour marks either class is defensible, and I decide on passenger count and bags rather than the clock. Five or more people do not fit a very light jet cabin at any duration, so a party that size moves to a turboprop or a light jet even on a ninety-minute leg.
The top band is deliberately wide. Past three hours the question stops being turboprop against jet and becomes which jet, and that is answered by how many people are going and how far. Four people to Denver and ten people to London are both in the over-three-hour band and they are not the same airplane.
At what flight time does a light jet beat a turboprop?
Around two hours a leg, and it arrives as a slope rather than a switch. A very light jet takes the lead first, through the two to three hour band, and a full light jet takes over past three hours where its own hourly figure falls furthest. That is turboprop vs jet reduced to timing, and timing is only one of the three variables.

Now the part I have not seen anyone else publish. Every trip below is a confirmed, flown booking out of our own records.

Now sorted by how long each LEG was, which is the number the rule actually turns on:

Leg length is a trip’s total flight time divided by its number of legs, so a round trip totalling three hours counts as two ninety-minute legs rather than one three-hour trip. Trip counts sit next to every figure, because a two-trip average and a nineteen-trip average are not the same kind of number.
Read the columns and the rule is mostly sitting there. Light jet charter cost across these records worked out at $7,783 per flight hour over 38 trips, and under two hours a leg the turboprop costs a little over half what either jet costs. In the two to three hour band, the very light jet comes in under the light jet by about $1,300 an hour. Past three hours a leg, the light jet reaches its cheapest hour in the entire book.
The honest wrinkle is the turboprop column. It is the cheapest number in every band it appears in, including the bands the rule hands to a jet.
Two things about that. Those upper cells rest on two trips and one trip, and a two-trip average is an anecdote with a dollar sign on it. The sample is thin because of the rule itself: nineteen of our twenty-two turboprop trips are under two hours a leg.
So the column is not evidence that a King Air is cheap at four hours. It is evidence that we almost never send one that far.
A note on how I sorted these, because it changes the answer
The first version of this table sorted trips by TOTAL flight time, and it told a different and wrong story. It made the turboprop look cheapest at every length, which would mean chartering a King Air for everything.
The error was round trips. A Jackson Hole to Missoula booking in our records shows three hours and six minutes of flying, which sorts into the three-hour bucket. It is two legs of ninety-three minutes each. That is a turboprop trip by any reading of the rule, and sorting it as a three-hour trip put turboprop economics into a band the airplane never flew.
Sorted by leg, which is how anyone actually plans a trip, each class turns out to be cheapest inside its own band. That is not me marking my own homework, it is what sorting by the decision does.
One thing the table cannot tell you: a flight hour is not a fixed quantity across classes, because the two do not fly the same route in the same time. Use the table to understand the shape. Use a quote to pick the airplane.
When is a turboprop the better choice?
Under about two hours, and any time five or six people with normal luggage are going.
A King Air seats five in a C90, six to seven in a 200 or B200 and seven to eight in a 350, and a PC-12 seven to eight. Both carry that party with standard luggage. A very light jet does not, at any flight time, because the cabin tops out around four. That single fact reorders more trips than the clock does.
Which is better for short runways, a turboprop or a light jet?
The turboprop, and it is not close. A turboprop charter gets into strips and unpaved surfaces that a light jet either cannot use or can only use with weight limits that defeat the point, which in the Mountain West is not a technicality but a list of real destinations.

Are turboprops less safe than jets?
No. It is the myth I correct most often, and it costs people money and comfort for nothing.
A turboprop is not less safe than a jet. Turboprop safety is a function of the operator and the crew, not the powerplant. Peak requires ARGUS or Wyvern approved crews on every turboprop it books, the same standard applied to every jet, and no trip is placed on an aircraft or crew that does not meet it.
Where the classes genuinely differ is ride quality, not risk. Cabin pressurization is standard on both, so the difference is cruise altitude rather than whether the cabin is sealed: a turboprop cruises lower and spends more of the flight in weather a jet climbs above. On a bumpy day a very light jet at altitude is the more comfortable airplane.
That is a comfort argument, and a fair one. Safety is not the argument, and anyone selling it to you that way is selling.
When is a very light jet the better choice?
Roughly two to three hours, with up to four passengers and light luggage.
In that band a very light jet is usually both the most economical option and considerably quicker than a turboprop over the same route. The higher cruise altitude also means a smoother ride through weather the turboprop flies in rather than over.
Push a very light jet past three hours and its limits show up fast, on range and on cabin. Four passengers becomes tight, luggage becomes the constraint, and the Citation CJ3 or the Phenom 300 becomes the better answer.
What about the Vision Jet and the HondaJet?
We have booked neither. Both are frequently flown single pilot, and we do not authorize single-pilot operations on any aircraft we source. Dual-pilot, ARGUS and Wyvern approved examples of both exist and we have been quoted them, but they are harder to find than an M2 or a Phenom 100.
The M2 and Phenom 100 are themselves single-pilot rated and commonly flown by two, which is how we book them. Both the Vision Jet and the HondaJet are also limited on range and passenger count, so past about two hours, or above two or three passengers, an M2 or a light jet fits better anyway.

King Air vs Phenom 300 is the version of this I am asked most, and it splits on leg length and head count rather than on badge.
On turboprop vs light jet, six people going ninety minutes is a turboprop without much debate. Four people going two and a half hours with carry-ons: very light jet. Four people going four hours, or seven going two with real bags: light jet. Those three sentences settle most of the calls I take.
How to use this before you book
Three questions, in this order, and the aircraft usually names itself.
How many people, and what are they carrying? That sets the floor on cabin size and rules out whole classes before anything else matters.
How long is the leg, honestly, in the aircraft you are considering rather than in a straight line? A route is a different number of hours in a turboprop than in a jet.

Per flight hour, yes. Across our own bookings, turboprop trips averaged $5,876 per flight hour against $7,783 for light jets. Per trip the gap narrows, because a turboprop takes longer to fly the same route. Compare finished prices for your specific city pair and date rather than hourly rates or per-hour averages.
Are turboprops less safe than jets?

How many passengers fit in a very light jet?
About four, counting cabin seats only and excluding the two pilots. Five or more passengers means a turboprop or a light jet regardless of how short the flight is. A King Air seats five to eight depending on model and a PC-12 seven to eight, so the turboprops carry noticeably more people than the very light jets do. Cabin size rules out classes faster than flight time.
