Most people flying a private jet to Cancun aren’t actually going to Cancun. They’re headed down the coast, to Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba or Tulum. So the first question on any Cancun trip isn’t the airplane. It’s which airport puts you closest to the place you’re sleeping.
Quick answer: A private jet to Cancun usually lands at Cancun International (MMUN), Mexico’s second-busiest airport, which has a private terminal with customs about 10 miles from the Hotel Zone. For Tulum, the newer Tulum International (MMTL) cuts a two-hour-plus drive. The charter operator needs Mexico’s charter permit, and every passenger needs a passport.
Cancun or Tulum: which airport should you fly into?
| Cancun International | Tulum International | |
|---|---|---|
| ICAO code | MMUN | MMTL |
| Opened | 1974 | December 2023; international flights since March 2024 |
| Private handling | Private terminal and handlers, customs on site | Available, still developing |
| Best for | Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba | Tulum town and beach, Sian Ka’an |
| Drive from MMUN to Tulum | 2 to 3.5 hours by car | Not needed |

For the Hotel Zone, Mayakoba or Playa del Carmen, Cancun is the answer. It has the long runway, the most handling options, and customs staff who clear private flights all day.
For Tulum itself, look hard at MMTL. The drive from Cancun to Tulum is long, and the coastal highway gets slow. Landing at Tulum turns a multi-hour transfer into a short one. The tradeoff is fewer services at a young airport, so we confirm hours, customs staffing and handling for your arrival before we commit to it.
Cozumel is a third option for some trips, but it suits smaller airplanes and limited services. For most groups we pick between Cancun and Tulum.
How long is a private jet flight to Cancun?
Great-circle distances to MMUN, calculated by Peak Aviation Solutions:
| From | Distance | Airplane that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | 462 nm | Light jet |
| Houston | 706 nm | Light jet |
| Dallas | 887 nm | Light or midsize jet |
| Chicago | 1,259 nm | Midsize jet |
| New York (Teterboro) | 1,357 nm | Midsize or super-mid |
| Denver | 1,452 nm | Super-mid |
| Bozeman | 1,904 nm | Super-mid |
From Houston or Miami, it’s a quick hop. From the Northeast or the Mountain West, a super-mid like the Citation X flies it nonstop with bags. A smaller airplane would need a fuel stop in the Southeast.
The Mexico paperwork, in plain terms
The Mexico rules that apply in Cabo apply here too:
- The operator must hold Mexico’s blanket charter permit. Single-trip charter permits ended in December 2024, per Universal Weather and Aviation. We only quote operators who have it.
- Passports for everyone. A passport book, not a passport card.
- Customs on arrival at the private terminal, and U.S. customs on the way home, with the manifest filed through CBP’s eAPIS system before departure.
- A customs stop on the return unless the operator has a CBP overflight exemption. Without one, the first U.S. landing is a designated airport near the coastline crossing, often in Texas or South Florida, before continuing home.
Here’s the honest picture on timing. International trips need more planning than a flight to Aspen:
"International trips always require a little bit more planning, just because of customs, aircraft handling, so on and so forth. So the more advanced notice, the better."
Pat Sinnott
Mexico is the exception for short notice, when the operator’s permit is current and customs can take the flight. Our Cabo guide walks through the permit change in more detail, and our passport and customs guide covers the documents.
Getting from the airport to your resort
Cancun’s private terminal sits apart from the airline terminals, which matters. MMUN is one of Mexico’s busiest airports, and the airline arrivals hall at peak season is a scene.
Typical drives from MMUN:
- Hotel Zone: about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Costa Mujeres: about 30 minutes.
- Mayakoba and Playa del Carmen: about 40 to 50 minutes.
- Tulum: 2 hours or more, which is why MMTL exists.
Drive times are Peak Aviation Solutions estimates and run longer in holiday traffic.
We set up a car service before you land. A sedan or SUV covers most couples and families, and a Sprinter van handles a group with luggage, golf clubs or dive gear. If a client wants to drive, we can have a self-drive car delivered before arrival, though most Riviera Maya clients prefer a driver.
Which private jet is best for Cancun?
It comes down to distance and group size:
- Short legs from Texas or Florida: a light jet such as the Phenom 300.
- Midwest and Northeast, 6 to 8 passengers: a midsize or super-mid.
- West or Mountain West, or a large family: a super-mid or a heavy jet, nonstop.
Water matters on this one. The routes from Texas and Florida cross a long stretch of open water, so we confirm the airplane carries the right overwater survival gear for the route.
Best time to fly private to Cancun
Peak demand runs from mid-December through Easter, with spring break the busiest stretch. Ramp space at MMUN fills on holiday weekends.
- Christmas, New Year’s and spring break: book a month or more ahead.
- Shoulder season, late April to early June: easier to find airplanes, often better pricing.
- Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30: trips still happen, but we watch the tropics and build a backup plan for each one.

Questions about a private jet to Cancun
What airport do private jets use for Cancun?
Most private jets fly into Cancun International Airport (MMUN), which has a private terminal and handlers with on-site Mexican customs, about 10 miles southwest of the Hotel Zone. Travelers staying in Tulum can use Tulum International Airport (MMTL), opened in December 2023, which avoids a drive of two hours or more.
Can you fly a private jet directly to Tulum?
Yes. Tulum International Airport (MMTL) opened in December 2023 and has handled international flights since March 2024. Its private aviation services are newer and less extensive than Cancun’s, so hours, customs staffing and handling should be confirmed for each arrival. For many Tulum trips it saves a transfer of two hours or more from Cancun.
How long is a private jet flight to Cancun from the U.S.?
A private jet to Cancun covers about 462 nautical miles from Miami, 706 from Houston, 887 from Dallas, 1,259 from Chicago and 1,357 from New York. That is roughly 1.5 hours from Miami and 3.5 to 4 hours from the Northeast. Longer routes from the West typically use a super-midsize jet to fly nonstop.
Do you need a passport to fly private to Cancun?
Yes. Every passenger needs a valid passport book to fly to Mexico, including on a private jet, and a passport card is not accepted for air travel. Passengers clear Mexican immigration and customs at the private terminal on arrival and U.S. customs when returning home.
How far is Cancun airport from Playa del Carmen and Tulum?
Playa del Carmen and Mayakoba are about 40 to 50 minutes by car from Cancun International Airport. Tulum is two hours or more by car from Cancun, depending on traffic, which is why many Tulum travelers fly private into Tulum International Airport (MMTL) instead.
The short version
Fly into Cancun for the Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen and Mayakoba. Look at Tulum’s new airport if you’re staying in Tulum. Use an operator with a current Mexico charter permit, bring passports, and book early for the holidays.
Heading to the Riviera Maya?
Tell us where you’re staying and who’s coming. We’ll choose the closer airport, confirm the operator’s Mexico paperwork, and have a driver at the private terminal. On the call, we’ll compare the Cancun and Tulum options side by side for your exact dates.
Think about it: wheels down, through customs, and at the resort before the airline crowd clears the arrivals hall.
