Most private jets cannot fly to Hawaii. That surprises people, because the same airplane that carried them coast to coast last month looks plenty capable. The ocean changes the math. There is nowhere to land for over 2,000 miles, so the airplane needs range plus a real fuel cushion.

Quick answer: A private jet to Hawaii from the West Coast needs a super-midsize jet or larger. Los Angeles to Honolulu is about 2,217 nautical miles over open ocean, beyond the safe range of light and midsize jets. Super-mids like the Challenger 350 or Citation X fly it nonstop in about five and a half hours. From farther inland, plan a heavy jet or a fuel stop on the coast.

Can a private jet fly to Hawaii?

Yes, but not every private jet. Here is how I put it to clients:

"Most jets simply don’t have the range to reach Hawaii. Super mid is the lowest category aircraft that can make it nonstop each way."

Pat Sinnott

So nearly every Hawaii request we see ends up in a super-mid or a heavy jet. A light jet or a midsize like the Citation XLS simply runs out of reserve fuel over the water.

Aircraft category Example Nonstop West Coast to Hawaii? Typical cabin
Turboprop King Air 350, PC-12 No 6 to 8
Light jet Phenom 300, CJ3 No 5 to 7
Midsize jet Citation XLS, Learjet 60 No, not with legal reserves 7 to 8
Super-midsize Challenger 350, Citation X Yes 8 to 9
Heavy jet Challenger 605, Gulfstream G-IV Yes, with more margin 10 to 14
Ultra-long-range Global 6000, Gulfstream G650 Yes, even from the East Coast 12 to 16

Why most private jets can’t make the crossing

Range numbers in a brochure assume calm air and a light cabin. Real flights carry passengers, bags, headwinds, and the reserves the rules require.

Three things eat the margin on a Hawaii leg:

  1. Distance with no alternate. Van Nuys to Honolulu is 2,217 nautical miles. Over land, a crew can always divert to the next airport. Over the Pacific, there is nothing until the islands.
  2. Headwinds going out. The westbound leg usually fights the wind, so it burns more fuel than the trip home.
  3. Reserves on top. Charter crews must land with fuel to spare, and they plan for an island alternate too. That cushion comes straight out of usable range.

A super-mid has enough tank to do all three with room left over. That is the whole reason the category is the floor.

The equipment you never see

Flying that far over water triggers extra rules for charter airplanes. Under the FAA’s extended overwater requirements for Part 135 operators, the airplane must carry life rafts, a life preserver for every occupant, and survival gear, including a locator beacon.

You’ll hear about it in the pre-flight briefing. Your crew shows you where the rafts are.

This is one more reason the operator matters. Not every charter airplane is set up for an ocean crossing, and the paperwork has to match the trip. Before we book any Hawaii flight, we confirm the specific tail carries overwater gear and the crew is current for it.

How much is a private jet to Hawaii?

Expect roughly $45,000 to $65,000 of flight time each way in a super-mid from Los Angeles, before taxes and fees (est.).

Here is where that number comes from:

  • Flight time: about 5 hours 25 minutes nonstop in a super-mid, per Flycraft’s route data.
  • Hourly rate: our own 2026 Citation X trips have priced at about $8,300 to $11,200 per flight hour (Peak quote history, 2026).
  • Math: 5.4 hours at those rates lands near $45,000 to $60,000. Published one-way estimates on the same route run about $62,000 to $71,000 (Flycraft).

Two things push the price up:

  • Repositioning. If the airplane is not based on the coast, someone pays to fly it there and back.
  • Waiting. A one-week stay usually means paying for the crew and airplane to sit, or paying for two empty legs. We price both and show you which is cheaper.

A heavy jet costs more per hour but brings more seats, more bag room and more fuel margin. For a family of nine with golf bags, it is often the better fit.

Which jets fly to Hawaii nonstop?

The airplanes we quote most for Hawaii:

  • Citation X. Fast, with range to spare from the West Coast. It’s the airplane we book most across all our trips. See our Citation X charter guide.
  • Challenger 350. Wider cabin, flat floor, eight or nine seats. See Challenger 350 charter.
  • Challenger 605 and Gulfstream G-IV. Heavy jets with stand-up cabins and room for a bigger group. See Gulfstream charter.

All of these fall in the super-midsize and heavy jet categories. For those classes, Peak requires operators to carry at least $100 million in liability insurance on super-mids and $150 million on heavy jets.

Flying to Hawaii from Bozeman or Denver

Here’s where geography bites. Bozeman to Honolulu is about 2,709 nautical miles. Denver is about 2,920. Both are beyond what most super-mids can fly westbound over water with full reserves.

You have two good options:

  1. Heavy jet, nonstop. A Challenger 605 or larger can make it in one shot.
  2. Super-mid with a coast stop. Fly to Oakland, Van Nuys or Seattle, take on fuel for 30 to 45 minutes, then cross. It is often the cheaper choice.

We run both and let the price and the schedule decide.

Which island airport should you fly into?

Each main island has a jet-capable airport with private-terminal (FBO) service:

Island Airport ICAO code Best for
Oahu Daniel K. Inouye International PHNL Honolulu, Waikiki, Ko Olina, Kahala
Maui Kahului PHOG Wailea, Kapalua, Lahaina
Big Island Ellison Onizuka Kona International PHKO Kohala Coast resorts
Kauai Lihue PHLI Princeville, Poipu

Fly straight to the island you’re staying on. Landing in Honolulu and connecting adds a step most groups don’t need. If you want two islands, a short inter-island hop in a light jet or turboprop takes about 30 minutes.

Waiting at the airport when you land: a car service, sedan or SUV, or a Sprinter van for a larger group. Prefer to drive yourself? We’ll have a self-drive car delivered to the FBO before you land and track it so it’s ready.

Do you need a passport to fly private to Hawaii?

No. Hawaii is a U.S. state, so a flight from the mainland is a domestic trip. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport, the same as any domestic flight.

No customs either. One thing does catch people out on the way home, though.

The USDA check on the way home

Every bag leaving Hawaii for the mainland is subject to a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection, private flights included. The check protects mainland crops from fruit flies and other pests.

On a private jet, it’s quick. USDA inspectors usually meet passengers near the airplane and check bags by hand before they’re loaded, according to a 2025 USDA Inspector General audit.

What helps:

  • Leave fresh fruit, flowers and plants behind unless they’re certified to travel.
  • Ask us about catering. Fresh produce for the flight home has to come from a USDA-certified caterer.
  • Give the FBO your departure time early so the inspector is there when you are.

The check usually takes minutes. For more on what crosses which border, see do you need a passport on a private jet.

Planning timeline for a Hawaii charter

  • 4 to 8 weeks out: lock the airplane, especially for the holidays and spring break, when super-mids on the West Coast book up.
  • 2 weeks out: confirm passengers, bags (golf clubs and surfboards change the airplane), and ground transport.
  • 3 days out: we start watching the Pacific weather and the forecast winds for the crossing.
  • Departure day: wheels up from the FBO, no lines, about five and a half hours to the islands.

Questions about flying a private jet to Hawaii

Can a private jet fly to Hawaii nonstop?

Yes, if it’s a super-midsize jet or larger. Los Angeles to Honolulu is about 2,217 nautical miles with no place to land along the way. Super-mids such as the Challenger 350 and Citation X fly it nonstop in about five and a half hours. Light and midsize jets lack the range with legal fuel reserves.

How much does a private jet to Hawaii cost?

A super-mid from Los Angeles to Honolulu typically runs about $45,000 to $65,000 of flight time each way before taxes and fees (estimate). Peak’s 2026 super-mid rates of about $8,300 to $11,200 per hour drive that range. Repositioning the airplane or holding it during a long stay adds cost.

What is the smallest private jet that can fly to Hawaii?

A super-midsize jet is the smallest category that can make the West Coast to Hawaii crossing nonstop each way. Midsize jets such as the Citation XLS cannot carry enough fuel for the distance plus required reserves. Peak Aviation Solutions sees most Hawaii charters booked in super-mids or heavy jets.

Do you need a passport to fly a private jet to Hawaii?

No. Hawaii is a U.S. state, so a private flight from the mainland is domestic and needs a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport, with no customs. Flights from Hawaii back to the mainland do go through a USDA agricultural inspection of passengers’ bags before departure.

Which Hawaii airport is best for private jets?

Fly into the island you are staying on. Honolulu (PHNL) serves Oahu, Kahului (PHOG) serves Maui, Kona (PHKO) serves the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, and Lihue (PHLI) serves Kauai. All four handle private jets through FBOs. A short inter-island hop of about 30 minutes connects them.

Can you fly a private jet to Hawaii from Denver or Bozeman?

Yes, with a heavy jet or a fuel stop. Bozeman to Honolulu is about 2,709 nautical miles and Denver about 2,920, beyond a super-mid’s safe overwater range. Options are a heavy jet such as a Challenger 605 nonstop, or a super-mid with a quick fuel stop on the West Coast.

The short version

A private jet to Hawaii starts at the super-mid category. From the coast, a Challenger 350 or Citation X does it in about five and a half hours. From the Mountain West, it takes a heavy jet or a fuel stop. No passport needed, and plan for the USDA check on the way home.

Planning a trip to the islands?

Tell us who’s coming, how much they’re bringing, and which island you want. We’ll match the airplane to the crossing, confirm the overwater gear, and line up the car at the FBO. On the call, we’ll go through holding the airplane versus paying for two empty legs.
